 The Ruined Trench

When it comes to your last breath

You can hear the sound of men shouting

The cut stings like you’re being tortured slowly.

When it comes to your last breath

You start trying to close your eyes

But no one lets you

Because you are needed to fight.

When it comes to your last breath

You can hear men dying with you

Even though you are in pain you try to help them.

When it comes to your last breath

Your life goes before you like you’re in a time machine.

The light starts to fade away

Then you let go of the pain.

 2nd prize

Joccoaa Burns-Curd

A Hard Day's Work

In the gentle setting sun,

Surrounded with the memories,

As all the hard days work is done

Watching over the smooth soft seas.

On the poppy covered hill,

Slowly falling asleep, laying down,

Soon I’ll be with my loved ones

Until they fix the burning town.

Silently watching the sun go down,

Closing my eyes and remembering what my wife said,

Have faith, have love know that I’m here

Even if the others are dead.

But at last I’m going home,

A hard days work is done!

 3rd prize

Alice Neate

The Poppy Field

I stared,

I cried,

I thought of when he died.

I crouched,

I sniffed,

Of the flowers scented whiff.

I cared,

I grieved,

I knew I had to believe.

I couldn’t bear it,

While I ran,

I kicked a dirty cola can.

I ran away, far away,

From the tragic past today,

Left behind in the Poppy Field.
